FIVE's Scott Howard and Banks White.
Berkeley's FIVE restaurant hosts "Seasonal Showdown Dinners" wherein executive chef/owner Scott Howard typically battles his own chef Banks White, but for the fall they're joining forces to compete against another East Bay chef team. This time, they've established a Deep South theme and will square off against Dean Dupuis and Charlie Copley from Oakland's Pican. We personally know that the latter competitors have great power in wielding mighty alligators if that gives them an edge (actually, they just make really good alligator nachos at their restaurant).

Each pair will prepare and present five courses; possible highlights from the menu include interpretations of étoufee, crispy trotters, oyster po'boy, barbecued short ribs, and cornmeal crusted catfish. That translates to 10 courses of eating for patrons, who will also get to vote on their favorite team. Eight dollars buys beer pairings from San Leandro's Drake's Brewing. The event is set up to seat 60 communally, so reservations are probably a good if not essential idea.

Where: FIVE Bistro & Bar (2086 Allston at Shattuck, Berkeley)
