Bread's not available from A Fire Inside ― yet.
Nobody said being a vegan baker with an entrepreneurial bent was easy. A month after failing to muster enough microloans via Kickstarter, baker and one-time Millennium cook David Surcamp is trying a new tack for cash to launch a wood-fired vegan pizzeria, bakery, and cafe in the East Bay. Vegansaurus tipped us to Surcamp's new plea to raise $35,000 by Nov. 13 on ChipIn. Or, for more immediate gratification, Surcamp's offering his vegan sweets now, from an online menu that includes bread pudding, three-layer cakes, cookies, and Weekend Ruiners, aka cinnamon rolls. There's a $20 minimum, a 72-hour lead time, and if you can pay what seems like a pretty nominal fee to have it all delivered (generally less than $10 to an address in S.F., Surcamp says). Otherwise, you're forced to do pickup. But since Surcamp is currently offering a 50 percent discount on new orders, you should be able to afford gas and bridge toll. Or anyway, the drain on your Clipper card. And if you opt for the cinnamon rolls, be sure to clear a weekend.
