Tour de Fat: Beer-Soaked Bikefest Rolls Saturday
What do a 6-foot-tall carrot, Sasquatch, and a gang of nuns on bicycles have in common? Tour de Fat, New Belgium Brewing's annual lovefest for all things bicycle (and yeah, some beer). The Tour pedals into Golden Gate Park tomorrow for its S.F. rendition, although its hometown ride in Ft. Collins, Colo., which began 11 years ago, owns the Guinness Book World Record for biggest bike parade. Expect lots of costumed revelers, lots of funky-looking bicycles (the more homemade the better), and right in the middle of it all, a biergarten.
Brian Yaeger "Remember, this is a bicycle festival with beer, not the other way around." Sure.
They'll be serving Fat Tire, natch, the bike-friendly and -inspired beer that launched the brewery back in '91, as well as other members of the New Belgium family. If we're lucky, that'll include Eric's Ale, a sour peach beer that just earned a silver medal at the Great American Beer Fest. All proceeds from tomorrow's beer sales benefit the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition and Bay Area Ridge Trail Council.
Here's the schedule of events. And as the brewery itself says, "Remember, this is a bicycle festival with beer, not the other way around."
