Berkeleyside reports on the Labor Day weekend debut of the Skylite Snowballs truck, which parked in front of Berkeley's Star Grocery on Sunday and hit up Oakland's Lake Merritt on Monday with Baltimore's answer to syrup-drenched shaved ice.

Though the name is a nod to an artificial, "blue"-flavored snowball, Skylite offers a Bay Area twist with the use of organic syrups and toppings which were developed with the help of Stacie Pierce, pastry co-chef at Chez Panisse. Flavors include Four Barrel coffee, vanilla bean, lime, and jasmine tea. Owner Katie Baum tells Berkeleyside she's also considering locations in Emeryville and Oakland's Temescal neighborhood.
