Pop-Up News: Marcel's Kitchen Closes, Yats Appears in North Beach

Less than a month after launching Marcel's Kitchen in the Mission club El Rincon, on Sept. 1, Marcel Neal (featured in the cooking vid above) tweeted that he was shutting the Creole popup down. Neal, who's trained at restaurants like Jardinière and Gary Danko, says that his $6 po'boys and $8 fried chicken and waffles had been bringing in the Mission locals, but things didn't work out with the El Rincon owner. "It was a club first and a restaurant second," he says. Neal is falling back on his catering business, Marcels on Wheels, while he looks for a new kitchen ― this time, he hopes, an arrangement that will become long-term.

Another Creole/Cajun pop-up, Yats, just announced that it's going to reappear after a few months' hiatus, this time in North Beach. Yon Davis's planned Bayview restaurant still appears to be in the works, but in the meantime, he'll be at The Boardroom (1609 Powell at Green, www.woodyzips.com), on Saturdays and Sundays. He's launching this new venture with a Saints season kickoff party on Thursday, Sept. 9, from 5 to 9 p.m. SFoodie has a call in to Yats to find out more about the proposed menu of po' boys and po'girls (?).
