With Old Oak Beer Co., Local Beer Blogger Turns Brewmaster
Old Oak Beer Co. is on course to be licensed by the ABC (Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control) one of these days. Founded by Beer & Nosh blogger/beer dinner purveyor/beer porn photog Jesse Friedman ― along with partner Damian Fagan, whose design work already graces other local beer bottles ― the pair will soon proffer "farm to barrel" Belgian-style beers incorporating local fruits. (Their initial "farm to bottle" catchphrase was nabbed seconds before they could get it.) Old Oak's first offering will be a Blackberry Belgian Golden Ale, with berries sourced from Sebastopol. ![]()

Once the ABC waves its magic wand of approval, look for these artisan, barrel-aged elixirs at fine restaurants around town starting with The Summit and Flour + Water, hopefully as soon as December. Says Friedman of the current hurry-up-and-wait period: "It's going fairly smoothly with the ABC. It's more that we're waiting for the beer to mature in barrels."
Somewhere in the Drake's Brewing wood cellar in San Leandro, there are pounds of blackberries eagerly awaiting the chance to wash down a sunchoke or roasted marrow pizza.
