Sonoma County Gravenstein.
An orchard of ancient Gravenstein apples ― prized for their ability to tart and plump up a pie by Jonathan Kauffman ― will be the setting for a fall tasting next month in Healdsburg. The three-hour event at Gina's Orchard is heavy on samples of seasonal fall favorites: artisan cheese (from Bellwether Farms, Bodega Artisan Goat Cheese, Redwood Hill, and Two Rock Valley Goat Cheese), and rare pear and apple varieties. Check out primo samples of fruits with names such as Claygate Pearmain, Roxbury Russet, Belle de Boskop, Hudson 's Golden Gem, Sierra Beauty, Api Etoile, Hoople's Antique Gold Hardy, French Butter Pear, and Duchess Bronzee. Experts will be on hand to offer growing, cooking, eating, and preserving, so you should be able to savor the apple and pear goodness year-round.

The event is a fundraiser for the North Coast Chapter of the Community Alliance with Family Farmers. Other sponsors are Slow Food Russian River, and California Rare Fruit Growers' Russian River chapter.
