Zaab Northeastern Thai Brings 'Tasty' to Clement
There's a new Thai place on Clement Street. Two-week-old Zaab replaced the Golden Deer, a Vietnamese restaurant that was often empty, and whose only virtue seemed to be that it stayed open until 2 a.m. on weekends.

Zaab means "tasty" in the northeastern Thai dialect (it's unrelated to Mission Street's Zabb ― a different spelling of the same word.) Owner Kriengkrai Amornratanakosol (don't ask us to pronounce the name) showcases northeastern Thai cuisine with more than two dozen salads, a handful of seafood dishes, and several recognizably Thai-traditional dishes like pad thai, gai yang (grilled chicken), and tom zap (spicy hot and sour soup), as well as many lunch specials. Peruse the extensive menu of more than a hundred items, and it's clear that more than two-thirds of the dishes are priced at $7.95 or less. There are currently a couple of grand opening deals (free Thai iced tea with orders $20 and up, free dessert, etc.) posted, valid till Sept. 30.
Clement Street loses a late-late night eatery but gains a tasty replacement, literally anyway. Let us know if you try the food before we do.
