Whole Foods held an Around the World Bistro Dinner on Aug. 18, a fundraiser for SF Street Food Festival organizers La Cocina. Besides showcasing the cooking of three La Cocina-supported vendors who will sell at the festival (Nigerian food from Chiefo's Kitchen, Mexican from El Buen Comer, and Malaysian from Azalina's Malaysian), the evening also illuminated a new dimension to how the local stores in the chain plan to support the Bay Area street-food scene.

Besides offering packaged products from mobile vendors, Whole Foods' Local Products Forager Harvindar Singh told diners gathered in the Bistro of the Potrero Hill location that he also hopes to work on ideas such as having the Bistro kitchen feature food from La Cocina on a permanent basis, something that would instantly broaden the neighborhood's culinary offerings. Singh also said he's in talks with Liba Falafel and Curry Up Now as well as Filipino and Laotian vendors. It was encouraging to see the multiple ways in which the chain can offer a new level of visibility for those who sell on the streets.
