Omnivore Books Snags Consulting Deal with Williams-Sonoma
Williams-Sonoma likes Noe Valley's Omnivore Books so much, the bigger-than-God cookware chain has hired Omnivore's Celia Sack to serve as book consultant. Publishers Weekly reported yesterday that Sack had signed on to do a monthly food book pick for W-S's 259 stores, called "Omnivore Recommends." August's pick, Omnivore manager Samantha Tackeff tells SFoodie: 5 Spices 50 Dishes by Oakland author Ruta Kahate.

Tackeff also sheds light on the approximately 250 vintage cookbooks she and Sack (currently vacationing on the East Coast) sent off ― with handwritten recommendations ― to Williams-Sonoma's top 29 stores. "We really tried to curate them to each of the areas of the country where they're going," Tackeff says. The store in Edina, Minn., for instance will get the vintage Treasured Polish Recipes of America by the Minnesota Polanie Club. Retail price will range from $25 to significantly more for older signed James Beard books, Tackeff says.
At Williams-Sonoma's Union Square store, manager Heather Intoschi had only just received 10 vintage books form Omnivore, including The Fisherman's Wharf Cookbook of 1955, and 1984's Chez Panisse Pasta, Pizza & Calzone by Alice Waters. Intoschi says the books should hit the floor by the end of the week.
She predicts they'll do well. "Customers are looking for new, innovative things and recipes," Intoschi says. "Even though these are vintage and older," she adds.
