John T. Edge moderates a talk on truck culture, Aug. 22.
The La Cocina-organized SF Street Food Festival is just 10 days off (the daylong fest drops Saturday, Aug. 21). This year's vendors: a familiar mix of mobile vendors and restaurants ― culled mostly from the Mission ― serving up diverse cuisines, mixed with Cocina client entrepreneurs (scroll through the complete list at the SF Street Food Festival website). And sure, while, assuming the lines don't kill, it should be a pleasure to graze from Kitchenette, Nombe, and 4505 Meats, we get the feeling that the meatiest portion won't even be served till the fest is officially over.

That's because this year, the festival is followed by what La Cocina's calling the first annual Street Food Conference, spread over two days, Sunday, Aug. 22 and Monday, Aug. 23, at Hotel Vitale.

Sunday's divided up into two sessions (they follow a morning-after brunch at Americano in the Hotel Vitale), available for a combined ticket fee of $25. First, a probing of open-air stalls (with Charles Phan and Mourad Lahlou, among others). Second, a look at the state of the truck in America, moderated by author John T. Edge, with a quartet of mobile vendors: Kamala Saxton of Seattle's Marination Mobile, Bryan Petroff and Doug Quint of Manhattan's Big Gay Ice Cream Truck, Veronica Salazar of S.F.'s El Huarache Loco, and Jon Ward of Kung Fu Tacos.

Monday's got three conferences, one on the culture of street food, another on street food and urban planning, and a third on the economics of mobile vending. All three, together, cost $20. Details on individual sessions ― plus a lot of other stuff ― at the conference info page. For tickets, click on the link at the festival site.
