City Says Yes to Three New Off the Grid Street-Food Markets for S.F. Parks
More than four hours into yesterday's Rec and Park meeting, commissioners approved a proposal to create three mobile street-food markets in city parks. Off the Grid organizer Matt Cohen had proposed to start similar markets in Civic Center Plaza, in the southeast corner of Golden Gate Park, and at Mission Playground. Without objection last night, commissioners gave the nod to Cohen's proposal.

Cohen ― who described himself as "elated" ― said the next step will be to work with the Health Department to get a green light for permitting. After that, he said he'll be ready to roll the three new weekly street-food markets: Off the Grid Civic Center, Off the Grid Haight, and Off the Grid Mission. "There's been a lot of interest from vendors, a lot of interest from these communities in seeing street food in their areas," Cohen said. No word about when the permitting process might be completed, or when the new markets might debut.
The expansion of Off the Grid, which began three weeks ago at Fort Mason Center, marks a watershed in legal street food in San Francisco. "This really gives the rest of the city what the Mission, primarily, and some areas of SOMA have been experiencing for a long time now," Cohen said.
