Unwind Prepares to Sun-Bake Its Customers, Brasserie Lille's Balthazar Ambitions

Categories: Buzz Machine
The last 24 hours in rumor, innuendo, and straight-out facts about restaurant openings and closings in San Francisco.

Yesterday, SFoodie forgot to mention the opening of Unwind on Union (1875 Union at Laguna, 999-7283, unwindonunion.com), whose opening day UrbanDaddy trumpeted on Tuesday. The owners, Eater reported a few months back, are Kai Vance and Todd Slosek; UD says the chef used to cook for Dan Aykroyd (wonder if they'll be serving Aykroyd's Crystal Head vodka?). The pitch: Big glassed-over sundeck, all-American menu with pizza by the foot, and beer-can chicken.

Paolo L. at Inside Scoop has news of Brasserie Lille (corner of California and Front), settling into the old Atrium space. Projected to open in the fall, the restaurant comes from the Whisk Group, the guys who bought the Aqua name and assets when Michael Mina took over its space. The pitch: a San Francisco Balthazar (how many times have we heard that over the past decade?), i.e., classic French dishes and a big bar, bigger terrace, and biggest dining room.

Other Scoop intel: Schmidt's reduces its hours, possibly trying to deal with that neighbor who likes to yell out her window at their customers. And Top Chef alumnus Eric Hopfinger is out at Waterfront Restaurant.
