The Taco Shop at Underdog's: Best Place in S.F. to Watch the World Cup?
The place: The Taco Shop at Underdog's, 1824 Irving (at 19th Ave.), 566-8700![]()
Anna L Conti/Flickr Everything you need at game time.
The hours: Daily, 4:30-6 p.m.
The deals: $1 tacos; Dos Equis at $2 per pint
The digs: This barnlike neighborhood hangout is one of the city's great sports bars, with flat screens aplenty, enormous flags and banners hanging from the rafters, and a bar that stretches halfway to Golden Gate Park. Darts, a jukebox, and Pac-Man keep things hopping between innings, and there's a family-friendly area towards the back with a picnic table, a mini-basketball game, and other diversions.
The verdict: Underdog's has everything you need at game time: a well-stocked bar, comfortable seating, a lively, convivial atmosphere, and cheap yet tasty tacos in chicken, carnitas, or carne asada. Crafted from locally and organically raised ingredients, they're served in saucer-sized corn tortillas with lots of chopped onion and cilantro, and are juicy and satisfying to boot. Three or four of 'em plus a $2 pint of Dos Equis should see you through a good chunk of the first half very nicely. ![]()
