Off the Grid's Wildly Windy Debut

A moment of stillness before the wind.
Last Friday's Fort Mason debut of weekly street-food market Off the Grid was so windy, tented vendors had to get creative with ways to weigh their shelters down. But the weather didn't deter hundreds of people from checking out a dozen Asian and Latino food vendors (in tents and trucks). The amount of food available kept lines relatively short and swift for most of the evening, though word of the growing line at Chairman Bao was repeated to us several times in market's final hour.

Three stomachs would have been necessary to take advantage of everything we wanted to try, including paneer tikka masala burritos from Curry Up Now, lacy turmeric-saturated crepes topped with kabocha and lentil from Azalina's Malaysian, hulking gorditas from Chaac Mool, kimchi bowls and yakitori by Peko Peko, and salmon tacos from Global Soul. It was satisfying to see both regional specialties as well as cross-cultural experiments on the menus.

Luckily, Off the Grid takes place every Friday at Fort Mason from 5-8 p.m., with more neighborhoods to come, so we'll be able to eat our way through it all in due time. We'll keep you posted on new developments as they happen. In the meantime, bundle up and bring a Tupper.
