Bacon al Pastor from Crispy Tacos, SOMA's Newest Food Truck
Wednesday, June 23, 2010![]()
John Birdsall Crispy tacos with bacon al pastor and carnitas ($3 each).
We're pretty sure 2010 will go down as the Year of the Food Truck in San Francisco. The latest: Crispy Tacos, Matthew Griffin's straight-up taco and sandwich wagon, which rolled out about two weeks ago and parks weekdays at three spots in SOMA. Griffin's a musician and former sous chef at Hotel Nikko and CCA instructor who's most recently done event catering. Oh, and he looks a bit like Guy Fieri, minus the douchey swagger. Griffin sources hormone-free meats, then serves them up in hefty configurations that'd hold their own as late-night après-bar food. ![]()

They're not bad at lunch, either, though ― piled with chunks of braised beef brisket ― Jose's Original Mexican Sandwich (named for Griffin's business partner, Jose Anyarin) is a two-pound gut-buster only the truly ravenous should attempt. Better to go with the namesake crispy tacos, a double layer of brittle white corn shells filled with the protein of your choice: brisket, chicken tinga, even seitan, poached in dark beer and sambal. Our favorite? Bacon al pastor, meaty trimmings cooked with pineapple juice and Sriracha. Porky hunks of carnitas are nearly as tasty. ![]()
