Kauffman's Five: This Week in Food Bloggicization

Now we understand why this line forms.

This week's favorite bits from the blog and beyond:

1. Bite o' the week: The custard tart at Golden Gate Bakery is one of those mythical San Francisco foodstuffs that has been so hyped up over the years I thought it couldn't possible be as good as they said. How wrong I was.

2. As SFoodie John Birdsall discovered this week, although the city keeps saying it wants to become more street-food friendly, the Health Department just proposed new catering permit fees for anyone selling food on the street, at farmers' markets, and at clubs. The consolation, for some, is that the department wants to simultaneously reduce fees for farmers'-market vendors. Great ― but that's not where the majority of new street-food vendors want to be.

3. I'm not inclined to attend mass feeding events ― too many lines, too many people ― but Andrew Simmons' report on the gluttony at last weekend's Cochon 555 had me regretting my decision to stay away.

4. Tamara Palmer discovers the Alembic's lovely Southern Exposure, a spiky, vegetal thing, easily sucked down, and the only thing that can tempt me away from the brown liquors at the Haight Street bar.

5. We just got word of two new African restaurants that will open in the next few months. Radio Africa's Eskender Asegad, who's been doing popups at the Coffee Bar for years now, announced that he's secured a permanent restaurant space on Third Street. And SOMA should soon see the opening of Moya, an Ethiopian restaurant and cafe that will offer hard-to-find breakfast dishes, kitfo (beef tartare mixed with spiced butter), vegan options, and home-baked bread.
