CUESA's Urban Eats County Fair Promises Plenty of S.F. Flavor
We harbor pleasant memories of childhood visits to the state fair: prize hogs, pink and bristly, bulging from their pens, ribbon-worthy layer cakes, and all manner of fried foods served on sticks, tucked into greasy waxed-paper wrappings.
On June 20, we will revisit those summer excursions at an event with a San Francisco spin on the iconic form. CUESA's first-ever Urban Eats is a celebration of this county's impressive array of amateur gardeners, picklers, charcuterie crafters, and artisanal food revivalists, in the shape of contests, complete with fair-appropriate musical offerings and stomach-twisting carnival rides.
When it comes to breaking down, say, the city's best honey or largest, loveliest eggplant, the competition ― judged by Jeannie Choe, organizer of the popular SF Food Wars cook-offs, and Celia Sack, owner of the loved cookbook shop Omnivore ― should be fierce. Yet even noncombatants should warm to a host of expert speakers and cooking demonstrations. This is all happening at this year's Giants County Fair, which runs from June 11-20.
