Yats' Crawfish Boil a Pre-Party for SANFRANOLA Bash

Categories: Events

Scene from Yats' crawfish boil in April.
We often think of the Dos Equis commercial in which the Most Interesting Man in the World breaks down the "two-party system": "The after-party is the one you want to attend."

However, if an upcoming event is any indication, the seasoned, Hemingway-gone-haute adventurer's reasoning is flawed. On the evening of May 15, SANFRANOLA will celebrate New Orleans and its commonalities with the Bay Area ― a historic affinity for food, music, drinking, free-spirited fashion, and clever rappers. This party ― brass bands, jambalaya, etc. ― goes down at the Boom Boom Room on Fillmore, beginning at 9 p.m.

However, another party ― the pre-party ― begins at 1 p.m. across the bay in
Oakland's San Pablo Arts District, and if you have to choose, it might be the one you want to attend. Yon Davis of Yats is boiling a half-ton of crawfish. He'll also have spicy potatoes, corn, shrimp poboys, crawfish pasta, lemonade, and Abita beer.

The $25 tag is for serious, all-you-can-cram diners. If you insist on stinking up BART with a drippy sack of steaming red bugs, Davis and his cohorts will send you home with three pound to-go parcels of crawfish for the same price. If the pre-party is the one you want to attend, buy your tickets as soon as you can.

New Orleans is the feel-good city of the year, but not because things are all good there. To that end, please see persistent poverty, ongoing disaster recovery, and choking humidity for details. Nonetheless, almost everyone we know ― perhaps still sweaty from the Saints' Superbowl triumph ― feels a human and cultural kinship with Crescent City and an investment in its resurgence ― even in the absence of a personal connection. Enjoying the food certainly doesn't hurt.
