Where tourists throng, there are no holidays. That's why, if you failed to source that drop-dead Memorial Day picnic you told yourself last year you'd be spreading out in Lindley Meadow today, the Ferry Building is probably a fated destination. Boccalone's mortadella hot dog is scaled to the day and place. A pistachio-studded link of Bologna sausage wedged in an Acme hot dog bun, it has frankfurter outlines with San Francisco aspirations ― it made its seasonal re-appearance on the Salumeria menu a few weeks back. Last year's version seemed better (the mortadella plumper, more velvety, the house-made pickles brighter). Then again, so did the grandiose picnic plans you cooked up for this year.

Boccalone Salumeria Ferry Building Marketplace, #21 (at Embarcadero), 433-6500.
