D & A Café: Chinese Soul Food on the Cheap
The place: D & A Café, 407 Clement (at Fifth Ave.), 668-7882![]()
David B./Yelp
The hours: Daily 8-11 a.m., 3-6 p.m., and 10 p.m.-1 a.m.
The deals: Big platters of Chinese soul food at $2.75-$4.28 apiece
The digs: Your typical bare-bones brightly lit Formica-limned dining hall. Inner Richmond regulars convene at booths and tables; hand-lettered signs advertising the day's specials are the venue's sole decorative accent.
The verdict: The D & A offers an eclectic menu of generally unusual, generously apportioned, and amazingly inexpensive dishes during its whimsically scheduled happy hours. For instance, $2.75 will net you chicken feet, a fish burger, French toast, scallion cake, pig's blood porridge, octopus-ball soup, or fried sausages wrapped in bacon. For $3.28 you can feast on fried bananas, fried mussels, or a spiced pig's ear, stomach, or intestine, and if you're feeling flush you can lay out $4.28 for salt and pepper smelt, pork liver and kidneys, stir-fried spaghetti, spicy jellyfish, fried quail, duck's tongue with soy sauce, or honey-walnut shrimp. You're bound to find something that appeals to your appetite no matter what time of day it is, and you won't leave the place hungry or strapped. No alcohol, but iced milk or a red bean ice is only $1.38.![]()
Matthew Stafford The eclectic menu offers both jook and macaroni.
