Ferment Change is Hosting a Cultured Dinner. Leave the Tux at Home
When we envision a cultured dinner, we imagine a Thanksgiving meal at which Uncle Pruitt won't lift his half-slurped goblet of IPA, stare at it curiously with his one good eye, and exclaim, loudly, from the depths of his corn pudding-swathed belly, "This beer tastes like p***y!"![]()
Ferment Change
Ferment Change has something different in mind. On June 4, the annual celebration of fermented foods and urban agriculture benefiting the long-running West Oakland urban ag operation City Slicker Farms will throw a very special al fresco four-course dinner featuring locally crafted fermented delicacies, art, music, and guest speakers Novella Carpenter and Willow Rosenthal, City Slicker Farms founder (and a prominent player in Carpenter's enjoyable Farm City).
The menu looks tempting, if a bit vegetal for our primitive palates: sprouted pea bisque with red cabbage kraut, Little City Gardens greens salad with spiced walnuts, chevre, and persimmon vinaigrette, Dijon-braised tempeh with peach chutney and slow-roasted root vegetables, and chocolate cake with honey-oat glaze and roasted strawberries.
Don't wear a tux. Leave the Grey Poupon at home. No need to brush up on your silverware etiquette. Just don't bring Uncle Pruitt - that is, if you have one, too.
