Sarah Marx Feldner
Publishers Weekly describes Sarah Marx Feldner, author of A Cook's Journey to Japan: Fish Tales and Rice Paddies (Tuttle Publishing, $27.95), as a "Japanophile." While the label was probably applied without any intended negative connotations, we read that and immediately think of sweaty, anime-obsessed teenage boys with sword collections, as well as shoe-averse Bert Cooper from Mad Men.

Feldner initially discovered Japanese food while teaching English there after college; she returned a few years ago to chronicle home-cooking traditions, soaking up narratives and techniques from waitresses, fishermen, farmers, and ― naturally ― grandmas. This book is the culmination of those efforts, a recipe collection enlivened by rich experience. On Friday, Feldner will appear at Omnivore Books ― most likely not clad in some ill-conceived costume she picked up at a store near Harajuku Station ― to share stories and sake. Details after the jump.
