What's it? That's it.
As a daily windup to the Weekly's Best of S.F. 2010 on May 19, we've teased out 92 of our favorite local dishes that taste like here. All the tasty details after the jump.

Number 12: Cappucino It's-It

When we were driving from the airport to begin our life here, half a lifetime ago, a slightly more seasoned San Franciscan (she'd been here three whole months) explained to us two basic rules of living in the city. Number one: Never call it "Frisco." Number two: Only tourists wear shorts (unless it's really, really hot). A few decades down the road, we'd add a few more pieces of advice. Number three: Never stare and never look shocked. Number four: The fastest way to get anywhere in San Francisco is by bicycle. Number five: If you ever want to be accepted by native San Franciscans, get to love the It's-It (or just pretend you do).

Jewel of the convenience store freezer case! Emblem of every San Franciscan childhood! Stoner food beyond compare! The It's-It, invented in 1928, is our very own junk food ― the softest, fluffiest ice cream ever engineered, piped between two oatmeal cookies, and then dipped in the thinnest, crackliest chocolate-like coating. Getting the It's-It to the right temperature is paramount ― you don't want to eat it when the ice cream is too solid, lest your jaw locks up and your teeth freeze to the filling; yet if you wait just a few minutes too long, everything you are wearing will be covered in milky splotches.

While we recognize that the vanilla It's-It is culturally superior to the much newer cappuccino It's-It, we have to say, the darker flavor and slight bitterness of the coffee ice cream make it a better foil for the oatmeal-raisin cookies. One more tip: Only tourists eat the mint ones.

It's-Its: located in a freezer case near you.
