Clean, rich iced coffee from the land of dirty rice.

As a daily windup to the Weekly's Best of S.F. 2010 on May 19, we've teased out 92 of our favorite local dishes that taste like here. All the tasty details after the jump.

Number 18: New Orleans Iced Coffee from Blue Bottle

Blue Bottle Coffee's founder, James Freeman, has been a champion of cold-brewed coffee since the roastery's early days, starting with the New Orleans style coffee and graduating to elaborate Japanese slow-drippers, which look like they were designed by Nikola Tesla. His New Orleans iced coffee redeems the disappointment that a cup of Cafe du Monde's thin, off-tasting chicory-laced coffee now offers tourists whose palates were trained by Peet's or Four Barrel.

According to Oakland coffee peddler Sweet Maria's, the practice of adding roast chicory root to stretch out coffee dates back centuries, arriving in France with returning Napoleonic troops and, one assumes, in New Orleans shortly afterward. Freeman's not keeping the recipe a secret -- why bother, when he can make money selling DIY kits, complete with instructions.  But rather than make a batch that takes us a week or more to finish, we prefer to pick up a fresh cup at the cafe. There's a hypnotic pleasure to the sight of the milk lazily swirling through the black liquid. The nose fills with aromas of chocolate and earth, and the chicory's bitter kick hits unexpected corners of the palate, softened by the slower-to-arrive wash of sugar and milk. Despite all the cubes of ice clicking against the sides of the glass, they don't diminish the coffee's potency. And you don't need to twist your mouth around the ugly portmanteau "Frappuccino" to order it.

Blue Bottle Coffee 66 Mint St. (at Jessie), 315 Linden (at Gough), Ferry Building Marketplace, shop #7, 151 Third St. (at Howard), all in San Francisco; 300 Webster (at Third St.), Oakland.
