The Bay Area edition of today's New York Times profiled local urban homesteaders, one of whom joked, "Canning is the new knitting." Whether or not you think that the Times article proves the DIY canning and preserving movement is jumping the shark, homesteading is creeping into more parts of society -- which makes sense, given that stress over finances keeps heating up, while the economy doesn't.

Hands On Gourmet (H.O.G.) is offering its first-ever pickling class, led by Leena Trivedi-Grenier of Leena Eats. During the three-hour class, Trivedi-Grenier will demystify making spicy garlic-dill asparagus pickles and five-spiced sweet cherries. You must be over age 12 to attend, and BYO apron unless you want to shell out an extra ten bones for one from H.O.G.
