SoCha Cafe's Free Jazz Sundays

For all its pastured-egg omelets and St. Francis Fountain sidewalk pileups, San Francisco doesn't seem to like music with the brunch we love so much. 1300 on Fillmore hosts a $39 gospel brunch; the DIY version is to attend morning services at Glide and walk over to Dottie's True Blue Cafe afterward. Not as well known is the Sunday jazz brunch at SoCha Cafe in Bernal Heights.

Almost every Sunday at 11 a.m., the Bill Carey Quartet starts up, playing through the early afternoon. It's a relaxed, open-ended affair ― and there's no cover charge, though you might want to bring a five- or ten-spot for the tip jar. The cafe makes pretty basic breakfast fare; you're also welcome to buy a cup of coffee and a pastry and sit for a while. The few times SFoodie has passed by on a Sunday morning, it hasn't been packed.  Which surprises us. After the jump, see why:
