The flesh is ridiculously soft.
As a daily windup to the Weekly's Best of S.F. 2010 on May 19, we've teased out 92 of our favorite local dishes that taste like here. All the tasty details after the jump.

Number 49: Thai Barbecue Chicken from Manivanh

We realize it's about as barbecue as a bonbon, but all the same, we're profoundly enamored of Manivanh's Thai-style "barbecued" chicken ($9.50). Hugging the deep end of the 24th Street corridor as it collides with Potrero, beneath the shadow of S.F. General Hospital, Manivanh serves some of the very best Thai food on the city's south side. Grilled, not smoked, the chicken is a standout, with a high proportion of black, charred skin hugging layers of glistening fat and ribbons of ridiculously tender meat. Whether you eat in or carry out, the pieces come laid out neatly in a row, with orange slices and a cup of syrupy dipping sauce riding shotgun. When your eyes roll back, your stomach sags, and you tell yourself, finally, that you can eat no more, take comfort in the fact that leftover bits (you won't have too many) will bestow delicious blessings upon whatever sandwich or salad you toss together for tomorrow's lunch.

Manivanh Thai 2732 24th St. (at Hampshire), 824-6059
