Oakland's Month-Old Beer Revolution Inspired by SOMA's City Beer Store

Napoleon said, "In revolution there are only two sorts of men, those who cause them and those who profit by them." A man like Fritz Maytag, who resurrected S.F.'s Anchor Brewing in 1965, is the former. A man like Fraggle, who ― together with his wife, Rebecca Boyles ― opened Oakland's Beer Revolution a month ago, is the latter.

Fraggle's revolution began building ever since he began home-brewing with his father in the late '70s. He says discovering Anchor Steam and Anchor Liberty Ale further fomented his fermentation odyssey. Observing beer-centric businesses such as Linden Street Brewery and The Trappist take root in Oakland, Fraggle and Boyles also took their cue from City Beer Store (1168 Folsom at Eighth St.), a business fashioned by S.F.'s beer power couple, Craig and Beth Wathen.

At Beer Revolution, 13 mostly local beers are tapped, including Moonlight Brewing's Misspent Youth Pale Ale. Furthermore, there are a few coolers stocked with the gamut of beer-geek brands and styles from Valley Brewing's Decadence Pomegranate Saison ― a sour, farmhouse-style ale ― to rarities like Oregon Trail's Bourbon Barrel Porter, a smooth, roasty brew with rich oak and vanilla flavors. Of course, there's a wealth of imports from Belgium, available for enjoying either in-store or back home.

Don't expect a lavish layout like the handsome Trappist. The vibe is artistic boho on a Salvation Army budget, set to a classic punk soundtrack. As for soaking up the alcohol, it's no coincidence (since Fraggle and Boyle are vegans) that they set up shop next to Souley Vegan (301 Broadway at Third St.). The cruelty-free soul-food restaurant is happy to deliver to the bottle shop.

Beer Revolution 464 Third St. (at Broadway), Oakland, (510) 452-2337; open Tues-Thurs. noon-9 p.m.; Fri.-Sat. noon-10 p.m.; Sun. noon-9 p.m.; closed Mon.
