Pieroshki, Dyed Eggs, Kulich ― It's Easter in the Outer Richmond

​"Kulich [pronounced koo-LEECH] is a sweet Easter bread that's kind of like panettone," says Biba Belikow, a congregation member at the gorgeous, gold-domed Holy Virgin Cathedral in the Outer Richmond. This Sunday, the cathedral is holding a kulich-decorating event for kids.

"We decorate the kulich with frosting, and kids normally put candies on there, or they put the X and B, which stands for [a Russian phrase] that translates as 'Christ is risen,'" she says. "Then we take the kulichi to the church on Easter night and have them blessed. Then we eat them." 

Kids will also be able to decorate eggs and pussy willows, and their parents will be able to buy additional kulichi, pashka (a sweet farmers cheese), pieroshki, and Easter decorations. There's no entry fee; however, to reserve a kulich for your child, call Biba in the next day or two. She isn't quoting prices, but all the funds raised go toward youth programs, so give generously.
