Make your fave food book lickable.
Inspired by the birthday of famous French epicure and barrister Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, on Thursday night, Omnivore Books is hosting an edible art contest featuring dishes referencing works of art or literature. With designs on the prize (half the door money), participants may enter for free; shameless gobblers must pay $5 for eats and the opportunity to help judge the victor. The possibilities are limitless. Omnivore's listing ponders a marzipan canine to represent MFK Fisher's How to Cook a Wolf. Not bad, but we were thinking something a little less self-consciously foodie ― like The BFG's warty Snozzcumber decked out in piped patterns of pureed greens, perhaps. We also wonder if a riff on a notorious Brillat-Savarin quote might qualify. "A dessert without cheese is like a beautiful woman with only one eye," the fromage fan once remarked. In The Physiology of Taste, he also wrote, "whosoever says truffle, utters a grand word, which awakens erotic and gastronomic ideas." Anyone successfully combining those two gems into a dish gets $1,000, no questions asked. April Fool's.

Details after the jump.
