One layer would be softcore, but three goes for the money shot.

As a daily windup to the Weekly's Best of S.F. 2010 on May 19, we've teased out 92 of our favorite local dishes that taste like here. All the tasty details after the jump.

No. 37: XXX Chocolate Cake at Baker and Banker

Back in the early 1980s, dining out with our mother and her friends meant that every restaurant meal ended with chocolate decadence ― a dark brown heap of cake, ice cream, fudge, and fat. We weren't quite sure what "decadence" meant, but it apparently looked appalling and involved a lot of giggling and moaning.

Lori Baker obliquely pays homage to the previous generation's decadence ― and three of the most popular chocolate desserts of all time ― with her porntastic three-layer chocolate cake. The bottom layer of the six-inch-high wedge: a flourless chocolate cake, which is neither dense nor (thankfully) molten-centered but has all the intensity of the 1990s staple. In the middle, she floats a layer of chocolate cheesecake, its slight tang a welcome counterpoint to the flourless cake below and the moist, airy chocolate cake above. Just in case the XXX cake proves too light, too elegant, for the chocolate lovers who need to wallow in theobromine, she finishes the cake off by smoothing chocolate fudge over the top and sides. Oh ... oh ... oh ... yeah.
