As anyone who watched the Super Bowl knows, Denny's is offering free Grand Slam breakfasts today from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. We thought it made sense to revisit John Stuart Mill's concept of opportunity cost -- use this handy chart to figure out whether Denny's "free" is actually worth your while.

Craig says:

Yeah, but they get you in extras... $2 for a soda, $2 for extra toast, $2 for substitutions.

They don't lose money... plus don't forget about your friend that just came with you to get a fruit salad or something. Great business tactics... offer something cheap for free and get people to come in and spend money on other low cost items with high markups.

This is cool, possible proof that the Denny's target marketing cant earn the business of most well educated people by giving their product away!

Jerry says:

Americans are fucking retarded.

Here in FL, the news showed the line wrapping around the building. People are standing in the rain for a $4 breakfast. Yes, it's only $4 here in FL for the Grand Slam at Dennys.

Dumb ass Americans!!!

@Jerry - Stereotype much? Here's a tip for you: stop being so cynical and your life will be much happier.

Adam says:

Maybe you should have your own cynical brain checked out as the cynicism you present to Mr. Jerry is far greater than the reality of the situation that Jerry took the time to point out.

The equation forgot to factor in gasoline expended in travel to and from Denny's.

why is the equation in a jpeg? It should be a webform that actually calculates costs and tells you whether or not to get a free Grand Slam.

Wow... Dumb Ass Jerry, go back to your own country if you have a problem with what Americans do!!! Who cares if someone stands outside in the rain to support one of Americas Icons in the food industry.

Who eats Denny's anyway? That's just sad. Fat! and Sugar! FTW! Unbelievable people. I like my bacon breaded and deep fried with maple syrup to dip it in. I am an American and I approve this message.

Bud Studly says:

If you go on your lunch break you could calculate your "hourly" wage as 0 (since you're not actually losing any time which could be otherwise spent making money) meaning you'd have to have an boredom rating of about 36 to make it not worth your while; other than that if you had an average impatience of lets say 5 you'd have to make around $7.36 to "make it worth your while". Overall it works out to be a pretty solid deal, I went with my brother before class today and got my free shit. Very worth while, it's a lot of fun to see a bill with nothing to actually pay on it. We joked around with the waitress and asked if she knew what 20% of 0 was but ended up tipping here anyway.

I'm sure the waitress thought that was hi-larious.

@Jerry, U are a dumbass. 1st of all you're in FLORIDA! 3 people in that line might of actually been Americans & 2nd they were all unemployed so it was actually a good investment of time to get a free meal.

will a carpenter says:

Opportunity cost doesn't really ring true here...because there is still the cost of food at another establishment.

It would take you about 70-90 minutes to get in and out on free grand slam day...but you're still getting food.

...so how does speing 13.86 at Applebees in 40 minutes result in a savings?

It doesn't. Because opportunity cost weighs the value of doing one thing against doing one other...and the other option for eating a free grand slam at denny's is not sitting at home doing nothing.

People should be allowed to spend 10x more money for the same food in the name of dignity so they can pretend to be better than others
