A renovation craze is apparently sweeping the Mission's ice cream stores. Tablehopper just reported that Bi-Rite Creamery is shutting down for expansion from Feb. 16 to March 2. Meanwhile, on Valencia Street, Bombay Ice Creamery has been papered over for a while now. The owners have been removing one of the walls in the back, almost doubling the size of the store, and adding tables.

In the interim, they've been keeping one of the ice cream cases in the Bombay Bazar section of the business. Starting today, it's moving back -- with more room for scoops. Joining the scoops of cardamom and saffron-pistachio (plus 38 other flavors) will be 16 new flavors, mostly American ones like espresso almond fudge, says owner Bharti Parmar.

In March, she and her husband will be adding an all-day savory food buffet, which Parmar says will be all-organic and should cost $7.95 for lunch and $8.95 for dinner. She's keeping the steam table small, featuring only two vegetable and two meat curries per day, so she can rotate frequently. "They're all homemade," she says, "not like restaurant food." Parmar also adds that she does catering. "I can cook for 1,000 people," she says.

Bombay Ice Creamery 552 Valencia (at 16th St.), 621-1717; winter hours: 11:30 a.m. to 8 or 9 p.m. daily
