Gut Check
The pickle-stretcher salad: Desperate housewives.
Our favorite morsel from the blogs.

Fewwd: Maybe reading about stomach-churning food mashups made with supermarket ingredients is comforting, the way reality TV's focus on the dickish and deluded offers clear catharsis. After you've had enough of SFoodie blogger Andy Wright and the cherpumple that gobsmacked Zeitgeist, check out these unsavory alliances on our sister food blog Gut Check from the Riverfront Times in St. Louis. In "20 Unholy Recipes: Dishes So Awful We Had to Try Them," Nick Lucchesi probes blogger Robin Wheeler's revival of the evil stepchildren of 20th-century American industrial foodways. There's jellied bouillon with frankfurters, hot dog salad dressing (disturbingly, it's exactly what you think), and Reuben chowder. That last one not only lets you imagine throwing up, it looks like throwup. And the pickle-stretcher salad from 1969 makes you wonder at the need for a strategy of going all loaves and fishes with the last Claussen in the jar ― a recipe every bit as desperate and unsavory as The Situation packing the crib with fake-bake hotties.
