The Good News? Seitan Never Left Weird Fish's Menu. The Bad News? Eat Fast
Vegansaurus' mrpenguino was drop-the-F-bomb ecstatic yesterday at news that Weird Fish had brought back vegan-friendly deep-fried seitan. Last week, mrpenguino penned a rage-filled post about the Mission restaurant apparently pulling the plug on deep-fried seitan. When the restaurant seemed to bow to vegan pressure and restore it to the menu, she was understandably self-congratulatory. "High fives team!" she wrote. "Let's all fuck in a bucket of deep-fried seitan!" Seems Uptown Almanac had the scoop about seitan's return: "Weird Fish Caves to 'Uppity Vegans,' Brings Back the Seitan," crowed blogger Kevin Montgomery in a headline.![]()

Only trouble is, it wasn't true. Any of it. Especially the caving.
Turns out Weird Fish owner Timothy Holt had never pulled seitan from the menu. Last week, as mrpenguino seethed, the kitchen was still frying it up. Holt told us he'd posted the restaurant's new menu ― which omits seitan ― online first, before implementing the changes. And if you go to Weird Fish tonight, you'll be able to order it. But as of tomorrow? Far from returning to the menu due to vegan pressure, seitan is officially 86'd. For the foreseeable future.
Holt says he's happy to be changing his menu, which has remained pretty constant for the three years Weird Fish has been open. And he says about 25 percent of the new menu is vegan: sweet potato-coconut soup, vegan chorizo tacos. There's no reason for anyone to be pissed.
Only we're not holding our breath about that.
