Chicken banh mi: Mellow hints of five spice.
While the Vietnamese restaurant Lotus Garden (3216 Mission at Fair) can be a fine spot for tea and a hot bowl of pho, it didn't really offer on-the-go lunch options. So owner Kathy Tang quietly started selling takeout-only banh late last year, and now sells five versions ($4.50), each with the requisite stash of mayo, carrots, cilantro, and jalapeños. We sampled both the chicken and shredded pork banh mi this week. The chicken had dark, rich meat and mellow hints of five spice; the pork was a tad spicy. There's also a combo featurig ham, påté, and "fancy pork," and BBQ pork and vegetarian tofu are also available. Lotus Garden is closed Mondays. Call your order in to Kathy at 282-9088.
