The Schmidt store in the Castro shut down last spring.
Dig this chocolate goss: A new chocolate shop is opening in the shuttered 16th Street retail store that was the original home of Joseph Schmidt. Schmidt (and Scharffen Berger) parent Hershey Co. closed the shop last spring; there were rumors that a Scharffen Berger shop would open in the space. But today, TasteTV is reporting via press release that Saratoga Chocolates (owned and manned, so to speak, by Mary Loomas) will soon take over the facility.

Saratoga chocolates have previously been available online, at South Bay farmers' markets, and at Cava Wine Bar in Capitola. From TasteTV:

Saratoga chocolates has been selected by Scharffen Berger to provide custom handmade chocolates to their Ferry Building store. The selection process was run by master chocolatier Joseph Schmidt. Mary expects to start providing products to them by the end of the year. In the process of working with Scharffen Berger and Joseph Schmidt, Saratoga Chocolates secured a sub-lease of the original Joseph Schmidt store on 16th Street. Saratoga chocolates plans to open the retail portion of this location in late September and move their production facilities there in 2010.
A media preview is scheduled for next week.
