Julia's Birthday is Over, But You Can Still Bring a Cake to the Balboa
Due to ever-popular popular demand, the Balboa Theater (3630 Balboa at 38th Ave.) is hosting a return engagement of its Julia cake-off. On August 15, which would have been Julia Child's 97th birthday, the Balboa offered free admission to Julie & Julia for anyone who brought a home-baked birthday cake. More than 30 bakers obliged, with offerings ranging from a peach-blueberry clafoutis to an unusual green tomato cake. ![]()
Balboa Theater Everybody likes birthday cake, right?
Balboa owner Gary Meyer told SFoodie he's repeating the offer this Sunday, September 6, since so many patrons asked him to do so. Free admission in exchange for your home-baked cake to any Sunday afternoon or evening screening -- times are 1:35, 4:00, 7:00, and 9:25.
As before, the cakes will be available in the Balboa lobby for all Julie & Julia patrons to share and enjoy. Maybe this time somebody will attempt the Reine de Saba that drove Julie Powell's husband Eric crazy in the movie?
