At Piccino, Hallowed Religious Feast Becomes, Well, a Feast
It's always a good sign when a dinner is scheduled to last "until the food runs out." That's the timetable for the upcoming Pig and Rosé Ferragosto event at Piccino (801 22nd St. at Tennessee). ![]()

Traditionally held in mid-August, this annual Italian feast has a long religious history, starting with the Romans all the way to today's Catholic commemoration of the Assumption of the Virgin. But here in San Francisco, of course, we've stripped it down to just the fun stuff. Piccino, for instance, is firing up a Cuban caja China ("Chinese box") to roast a whole heritage Duroc pig from Manteca's Long and Bailey farm. And just so you don't feel too bad about the critter's demise, consider that it was raised on a 100 percent vegetarian diet, slept on straw, and spent most of its time romping in open-air hoop barns under fans and water misters. Where do we sign up?
To keep the pampered pork company, Piccino will be grilling Mariquita Farm Padrón peppers and sweet summer corn to go with its current menu of thin-crust pizzas, salads, and desserts. It's happening this Sunday, August 30, beginning noonish. No reservations are required. For more information, call 824-4224.
