Add New Zealand meat pies to the city's growing roster of street foods. Alka Patel was a process engineer at a South City biotech company before realizing she had a calling in pie-making. The Auckland native recently launched The Pie Press, which began hawking foil-wrapped goodness at the Stonestown farmers' market two Sundays ago.

"I sold out of everything both days," Patel told SFoodie, including pies filled with lamb curry ($5.95), butter chicken, and bacon and egg (both $5). Patel is strict about ingredient purity: She uses organic New Zealand lamb, mostly organic vegetables sourced from farmers' markets, and Canadian-style bacon she buys at Whole Foods. Production happens at La Cocina in the Mission.

Patel -- who also does catering -- is aiming for wholesale distribution. "I've been approaching cafés to try to sell them there," she said.
