Sweet Beat: Recchiuti's Whoopie Pies (and Secret Ice Cream Social)

Recchiuti Confections (1 Ferry Bldg. at Embarcadero) has a new treat in its store for the summer: Whoopie pies, a retro cake 'n cream sandwich treat that was recently tipped by the New York Times to be back on the rise. But proprietor Michael Recchiuti doesn't do anything ordinary, so his version of makin' Whoopie (which run two for $8) includes candied orange and a lush coating of dark chocolate.

Recchiuti also just announced on his Twitter feed that he'll host an ice cream social this Wednesday, July 15, from noon to 2 p.m. in a secret spot; follow him there for more info as the event gets closer. If the Taste media preview we attended recently, during which he fed us shiitake-chocolate malt ice cream sandwiches and sent us home with pints of burnt caramel ice cream, is any indication, this isn't something that's sensible to miss.
