We are saddened to learn, via SFGate, of the
four-alarm fire that broke out early this morning at the South San Francisco plant of the
historic Columbus Salame Company. This purveyor of fine preserved meats was founded in North Beach by two Italian immigrants in 1917, which makes it one of the oldest food companies in San Francisco. While the report states that the building has been "devastated" by the fire, it is still unclear what the near future holds for the plant and its 30-plus employees.
