Doggy Bag: Today's Odds and Ends

Our favorite morsels from the food blogs and beyond.

Canned: Yeah, we're not buying 50-buck bottles of Montepulciano either these days. Beer & Nosh flogs what might be the ultimate Great Recession-buster event: tomorrow's Mission Street Food celebration canned-beer menu -- a summer meal orchestrated by MSF guru and gun show exhibitor (see studly pic) Anthony Myint, with suds picked by Nosh himself. Our favorite course is the Beer Float: Humphry Slocombe cinnamon brittle ice cream doused with Uncommon Brewers Siamese Twin Belgian double. Mmm, beer for dessert. Almost as nice as beer for breakfast.

With Two, you get kreplach: Lick My Spoon is learning how to delegate. She's got a guest blogger today: Andrew Coe, author of Chop Suey, a brainy history of America's like affair with General Tso's Chicken and Moo Goo Gai Pan. (We started to read it, we swear, but there were all those episodes of So You Think You Can Dance on our DVR ...) Spoon passes along Coe's essay on Jewish people and Chinese food. Here's a taste: Jews are sometimes called the "People of the Book" for their devotion to religious study. For American Jews from the 1930s through the 1970s, that book was often a Chinese restaurant menu. Okay, a bit forced, but you try to do better.
