Everything's Coming Up Meat!

Enthusiasm for local / sustainable / do-it-yourself meat seems to be hitting a new peak, with a slew of events over the next month and a half at which carnivores can study, taste, and feast on all things fleshy:

Saturday, 2/14, 8am-4pm: the Society for Agriculture and Food Ecology's Meet Your Meat series launches with visits to Devil's Gulch Ranch and Clark Summit Farm including a potluck lunch ($5 donation requested)

Thursday, 2/19, 7pm, UC Berkeley: Local Slaughterhouses, Local Meat, Meet Your Meat panel discussion with Sallie Calhoun (Cutting Edge Meat, Inc., Paicines Ranch), Sam Goldberger (North Coast Meats), Mac Magruder (Magruder Ranch), Mark Pasternak (Devil's Gulch Ranch), Paul Canales (Oliveto), Marsha McBride (Café Rouge), and journalist Heather Smith as moderator ($5 donation requested)

Monday, 2/23, 6:30-9:30pm, Cafe Rouge: Cutting Up a Goat with executive chef Marsha McBride, butchers Scott Brennan and Ben Broadus, ranchers Jeanne McCormack and Al Medvitz of Montezuma Hills Lamb and Goat, who will demonstrate goat butchery, prepare goat salami, kefta, and crepinettes, and discuss goat breeds, raising, breeding, and humane animal protocols. $65 includes tasting of goat charcuterie and wine.

Saturday & Sunday, 2/28 & 3/1, Cavallo Point: Hooves & Tales: A Two-Day Celebration of Sustainable Meat features discussions, demonstrations, and cooking classes with David Evans of Marin Sun Farms and Taylor Boetticher and Toponia Miller from Fatted Calf Charcuterie ($450)

Thursday, 3/5, 7pm, UC Berkeley: The Art of the Butcher, a Meet Your Meat panel discussion, with panelists Ryan Farr (Ivy Elegance, CHEFS Program), Nate Appleman (A16, SPQR), Melanie Eisemann (Avedano's), Mark Pasternak (Devil's Gulch Ranch), and Marissa Guggiana (Sonoma Direct, Secret Eating Society) as moderator ($5 donation requested)

Saturday, 3/7: Meet Your Meat FĂȘte du Cochon and hog roast, details TBA

Saturday, 3/14, 8am-4pm: Meet Your Meat visits to Soul Food Farm and Meridian Jacobs Ranch ($5 donation requested)

Monday & Wednesday, 3/23 & 3/24: Incanto's Head to Tail dinners ($75)
