One way that adults get to enjoy Halloween is through a holiday menu; maybe that's our foodie version of trick-or-treating after all. Absinthe, whose Executive Chef Jamie Lauren is S.F.'s lone contestant on the forthcoming season of Top Chef, is presently offering a soup of curry leaf scented pumpkin puree, vindaloo oil, and micro cilantro, which sounds like the perfect amount of spicy warmth as these days grow colder. Meanwhile, last season's Top Chef competitor Ryan Scott is serving roasted butternut squash soup with curried crème fraiche and toasted pumpkin seeds at his Mission Beach Café.

Chez Panisse hasn't chosen anything quite so overt for its October 31st menu, but its California spiny lobster salad with tomatoes and chervil Mayonnaise does seem to be a pointed nod towards the holiday. My beloved Sprinkles is selling Halloween-decorated caramel apple cupcakes for the rest of the week, and the description is as divine as they must taste: Spiced apple cake studded with Granny Smith apples topped with a caramel cream cheese frosting. Oh, yes please. And the ghoulish details are being kept under a mummy's wraps, but the French restaurant L'Olivier is offering a "special 'Scary' menu" on October 31 that's probably the opposite of frightening. —Tamara Palmer
