Drink of the Week: Happy Girl Kitchen's Hibiscus Lavender Lemonade

Happy Girl Kitchen from Aromas in Monterey County is known for its yummy jarred products like spicy carrots or heirloom tomatoes, which are sold in places like Rainbow Grocery and at their own stand at the Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market. At Sunday's FM, Happy Girl offered a new beverage of hibiscus lavender lemonade.

It's a surprisingly sweet treat, impeccably smooth without even a wink of tartness (Meyer lemons?). With the wrong balance, lavender can easily overpower anything it comes into contact with, but the note here is just right as it cocoons around the brightness of the hibiscus. The lemonade was $3/jar, though we got a deal of two for $5 at the end of the day; I'm disappointed with my past self for not buying at least a few more. Happy Girl is also currently offering canning classes through November in Aromas and Oakland. In the five-hour workshops, folks can expect to learn the art of preserving heirloom tomatoes, pickles, apples, pears and quince. —Tamara Palmer
