Eating on the Cheap: Hog Island Oyster Company

Monday and Thursday afternoons are a good time to indulge in the singular beauty of sucking down fresh raw oysters alongside nice, cold pints of beer and taking in a picture-perfect view of the Bay.
From 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. the Hog Island Oyster Company Bar in the Ferry Building Marketplace enters Happy Hour territory, shucking $1 Dabob oysters and pouring pints of quality brew for $3.50 a pop -- both significant markdowns, and well worth the money.
If possible, get there right at 5:00 because the smallish space fills up extremely fast, as does the waiting list. Grab yourself a table outside, and get down to business: I'd suggest two dozen oysters and a few pints of Blue Star Wheat. The shellfish are served with chunks of crusty bread from nearby Acme Bread Company, and if that doesn't cope your hunger, Hog Island's happy hour menu also includes delectable and reasonably-priced treats like fried anchovies with burrata cheese ($6) and day boat scallops ($6). If that doesn't make for a great afternoon, I don't know what does.
