Bakers, Start Your Ovens! Mission Pie Contest this Sunday, and Pizza in the Future

By Meredith Brody
Gentlemen (and women), start your ovens. The very neighborly, heart-on-its-sleeve, slightly pricey Mission Pie (2901 Mission at 25th Street, 282-1500) will celebrate its new space and unveiling of its third Sky in the Pie mural with a pie-baking contest on Sunday, August 3.
Festivities begin at 2 and roll on until 5; submit your pie by 3:30 to be eligible for prizes. Meet the mural artist, photographer Anne Hamersky – her subject this time, “When do you bake?” -- enjoy the old-timey music from Susan & Sarita, and learn how to weave a lattice pie crust from Joe the Baker.

And here’s the hot new news: Construction is going on in the old Mission Pie space, right next door, for a new kitchen whose purpose is going to be – ta-da! – baking pizzas!
A slice of Margherita topped with organic tomatoes and basil, followed by one of Mission Pie’s nectarine-and-cherry galettes? That’s a swell expression of neighborly Italian-French cross-culinary-collateralization, as far as we’re concerned.
