Anyone who has ever worked in the restaurant biz knows that in the process of slinging great-tasting (and great looking) food for the ravenous dining public, there's often a lot of waste. Whether it's day-old pastries, fish scraps, or a steak cooked well done instead of rare, there are a million reasons why food goes to waste, but there's also a great reason why it doesn't have to. Food Runners is a local organization that picks up perishable leftovers from restaurants, caterers, hospitals, bakeries -- pretty much any business that deals in food -- and takes it to area shelters and outreach programs that feed the hungry. They've been at it over 20 years and today they deliver about 10 tons of food per week to needy folks, food that would otherwise end up in the dumpster. If you'd like to donate excess food or volunteer, call 929-1866 or email feedsf@foodruners.org.
